Prof. Dr. Wim van der Linden Dr. Ir. Hans Vos

Core Course 6 is a synthesising study of how to use research and evaluation methods in educational technology. An elementary review of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and evaluation methods will be given.

Module 6.1: Nature of Research, Causal Inference and
                      Research Criteria

An introduction of the methodology of scientific research and a short review of the different research phases and methods will be given. The basic concepts of science will be discussed.

Module 6.2: Description, Sampling and Measurement
                      Problems

In this module the problems connected with causal inference will be discussed. The principles of sampling will be explained.

Module 6.3: The Nature and Logic of Inferential
                      Methods and Experimental Design

In this module an elementary overview of the basic principles of statistical inference will be explained and various experimental designs will be described. These principles are suitable for instructional design research.

Module 6.4: Learning SPSS

Becoming familiar with the statistical software package SPSS. Analysing some datasets using reliability analysis and statistical testing procedures.

Module 6.5: Inferences from After-the-Fact Studies,
                      Longitudinal and Single-Case Studies

In this module the principles of causal inference based on non-experimental studies will be explained. The uses and limitations of meta analysis will be emphasised. These methods are often encountered in comparative research on educational media and effectiveness studies.

Module 6.6: Concluding Assignment
