Core Course 2:
Models and Strategies of Curriculum Development (1995020)

Core Course 2 provides an overview of different models and  strategies for the design, development, evaluation, and implementation of curricula in various educational and training contexts. The course also covers practical development tools and policy aspects in the domain of curriculum.

Module 2.1: Curriculum Theory

Introduction of the domain of curriculum studies: planning, definition, history of central concepts and perspectives, research traditions and trends, social organisation of the field.

Module 2.2: Curriculum Development

Introduction of the systematic engineering approach of curriculum technology (roots, rationale, concepts, procedures, exemplary practices), especially from the perspective of curriculum development and curriculum change.

Module 2.3: Curriculum Implementation

Introduction to approaches and strategies for implementing curriculum programmes and materials.

Module 2.4: Curriculum Evaluation

Overview of strategies and procedures for evaluating curricula , including an introduction to the evaluation of complex curriculum reforms in practice.

Module 2.5: Curriculum Policy and Trends

Issues of curriculum policy and trends, including an exploration of various issues in curriculum politics and decision making, an orientation on curriculum policy, an introduction on the curriculum past, present, and future, and an overview of social and educational history of curriculum development and future trends.

Module 2.6: Concluding Assignment

Paper analysing and describing a relevant issue or problem in curriculum development policy or practice, applying the findings of the previous modules.

As a major textbook will be used:
Marsh, C. & Willis, G. (2001). Curriculum: Alternative approaches, ongoing issues. 2nd ed. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Merrill.

During the sessions also several hand-outs will be distributed.
